A Tale of two fine 18th Century Massachusetts “Tilt Top” Tea Tables!

The first of these two Massachusetts mahogany “Spiral Carved Urn” Tea Tables feature classic “elongated” ball and talon feet along with an exquisite edge molded serpentine top that retains its original wrought iron “catch”. The table was crafted around the time of the American Revolution along Boston’s north shore, perhaps at Newburyport or Salem. Measures 50 ¾” tall (when in upright position) and 28 ½” tall when readied for tea. Its top measures 31 x 30 ¾”. Discovered recently in a Brunswick, Maine home.

The second “Tilt Top” table is SUPERBLY PROPORTIONED and is a mid 18th century BOSTON QUEEN ANNE example. In fine original surface, this mahogany “snake foot” example measures 43 ¾” when its top is vertical top and stands 27 ¾” tall when in its down folded position. Its circular top measures 30” x 29 ¾” (expected contraction). An early wrought iron repair is evident at one leg. Found in a home in a western suburb of Boston.

A FINE 19th Century Painted COBBLER’S TRADE SIGN. The wooden “SHOE REPAIRING” sign measures 58 ¼” long x 17” tall. Found recently in NH.

This early 19th Century Painted Wooden TRADE SIGN: “A.S. GALE BLACKSMITH” was found recently in a barn loft in Gilmanton, NH. Mr. Abraham S. Gale was in born 1794 and is listed as an early GILMANTON, NH blacksmith. Measures 67 ¼’ long x 18” tall.

LLOYD HANSEN THOMAS (1910-1990).

The largest known example of the form, this signed “bas relief” carved and painted, wall hanging picture of two CLIPPER SHIPS is in its fine original frame. Signed l.r. “L.H. THOMAS”, the classic and LARGE work by this highly regarded CAMDEN, MAINE wood craver measures 31 ¼” tall 41 1/4'' wide (overall) and 25” x 36” (sight).

An untouched Vermont five foot drop leaf Harvest Table in the finest original red paint. Having superbly and evenly scrubbed pine top and superbly turned legs. Discovered recently in a mid 19th century farmhouse in Guildhall, VT. Measures 60” long x 21 ¾” wide (when closed) 40 ½” wide (when fully open) and 28” tall. Untouched original condition throughout.

A tribute to the remarkable
"EYE" of  E.S. FROST

The very finest renderings of Biddeford, Maine’s noted folk artist, EDWARD SANDS FROST (1843-1893). Frost’s genius of 19th century rug design is succinctly illustrated here, in both figural and floral subjects. We are pleased have these two immaculate examples of his typically generous sizes, exhibiting his graphic interpretations of coloring and artful brilliance in patterning! Each measures approximately 65” x 36”.

TWO RARE PIECES of PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN Signed MAINE REDWARE

From the renowned SAFFORD family of potters at MONMOUTH, MAINE. These recently discovered examples exhibit the work of TWO GENERATIONS of SAFFORD potters. One, a typically “brick red glazed stew pot stamped “JOHN M. SAFFORD” and crudely incised “36” on it underside (see photos). The other example is an exceedingly rare straight sided jug has a chocolate brown glaze and bears the stamp “JOHN SAFFORD 2nd”. The stew pot measures 6 ½” tall while the jug measures 8 ¼” tall.

Additional fine pieces of EARLY NEW ENGLAND REDWARE!

In FINE GLAZES and RARE FORMS, including SEVERAL more MAINE examples.
