NAUTICAL ITEMS:  A RARE and IMPORTANT recent discovery of Captain LEMUEL MOODY'S (Portland, Maine) 1796 FIRST EDITION of THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT found among a historically important lot of  mid 1700s to early 1800s  handwritten nautical journals, letters, inventories and notes from and by the noted FALMOUTH and PORTLAND, MAINE Founders, Sea Captains, Revolutionary War Veterans, Maritime Inventors, Cartographers, Builders, Merchants, Cabinetmakers  and Shipping Magnates ENOCH MOODY (1713 - 1777) and his sons LEMUEL MOODY (1767-1846) and WILLIAM MOODY (1756-1821), including such HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT items as ENOCH MOODY'S (was chairman of Town Committee of Falmouth during American Revolution) personal journals and accounts books from the 1730s to the 1770s; WILLIAM MOODY'S original diary and account of the 1779 BAGADUCE EXPEDITION (Revolutionary War); also Captain LEMUEL MOODY'S personalized leather WALLET ("LEMUEL MOODY PORTLAND 1804"), his POCKET WATCH along with his original WATERCOLORS, handwritten JOURNALS, CHARTERS, STOCK ISSUES, LETTERS, RECEIPTS and PLANS for the CONSTRUCTION of the PORTLAND OBSERVATORY in 1807 as well as his original navigational notes, correspondence,  logs and ledgers detailing his entire sailing career and his 1799 capture by French Privateers while piloting his SCHOONER BETSEY as well as the original MUSTER LOG of the PORTLAND HEAVY ARTILLERY; Important early PORTLAND MARINE SOCIETY documents and sketches related to the construction of the  FIRST MAINE LIGHTHOUSES; The original 1745 - 1770 journal of the FALMOUTH, MAINE joiner, cabinetmaker and sash maker ENOCH MOODY (1713-1777 the father of William and Lemuel) who was the Chairman of the "Committee" at Falmouth (later Portland) during the Revolutionary War.
