Things still arriving....these from a NH attic this past weekend! A fine O.L. & A.K. Ballard 6 gallon "Bird" churn with its original lid. Wonderful original surfaces on the tiny, early red cupboard, the "powder blue" lidded dough box and the folk art carved and painted pin cushion/spool stand.

Fresh from a home in Pittsfield, Maine comes this ULTRA THIN, EARLY, and HIGHLY FIGURED lathe turned MAINE BURL BOWL which measures 10" at its "out of round" top rim and stands a tall 3  3/8" at its side. Untouched and original throughout. An early AMERICAN burl bowl!!

A recently discovered Model 1849 Colt Pocket Pistol with Original Engraving and Ivory Grips. 5 Shot cylinder with 4" barrel. A nice honest, engraved example of a legendary percussion pistol.

Late but GREAT ADDITIONS
Arriving last Friday (4-09-2010), this spectacularly colored and brilliantly composed, schoolgirl sampler was wrought by Hannah Arkell of St. Joseph County, Ontario, Canada. According to cemetery records, Hannah Arkell (Phillips) was born in 1819 and died in St. Joseph County at age 94 on January 7, 1913. The sampler was found in an 18th century home in Gray, Maine. A graphic and folky sampler in the BEST original condition. 12  1/4" by 18  1/4" (sight). Its current frame has housed the sampler for many years but is an early 20th century replacement.

       
A nicely painted Maine Schoolmaster's Desk with a remarkably painted, full interior of six dovetailed drawers. Superb joinery throughout. West Central Maine, ca. 1820

A RARE and superb pair of identified and labeled Miniature Watercolor Portraits by the noted early MAINE miniaturist and silhouette cutter SAMUEL BRADBURN BANTON. The sitters are the Esquire HENRY (b. 1800-1862) and FANNY WILLIAMS DODGE (1805-1862) of FREEDOM, MAINE. Each of their portraits is housed in original matching, ebonized frames fronted with Samuel Banton’s reverse painted borders on their glass. Each portrait is identified (verso) in period handwriting and each also bears its original paper label that reads “Drawn by S. Banton”. REMARKABLY surviving, along with these portraits, is an original, dated 1836 pencil drawing of the Dodge farm that is tiled below “View of the seat of Henry Dodge Esq. from Freedom Academy  Nov. 1836   By Miss Persis Sibley”. Also included is an original 1831 handwritten deed to the afore mentioned Henry Dodge farm; an 1850 deed documenting the sale of a piece of Williams family land by Fanny Williams Dodge to her husband Henry Dodge and two 1860s vintage Ambrotype photographs of the sitters!! Samuel Banton’s paper labeled watercolor portraits of the Dodge’s each measure 5” by 4 ¼”. A rare folk art find and a truly amazing historical record!!

     
 
A fine Open Top Pewter Dresser having magnificent reticulated under cornice moldings, raised oval starburst paneled doors and fine “pumpkin” paint. Superbly joined and proportioned. Similar examples have been found in the Margaree Valley of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. See cover and plate # 96 of Michael S. Bird’s Canadian Country Furniture. Measures 52” wide and 76” tall.

Maine Tall Case Clock by Frederic Wingate (1782-1864)  of Augusta.

Its crisp dial reads: “Frederic Wingate  Augusta 1807 No. 38”. A strong Wingate paper label is found on the inner backside of its case. Measures 97” tall. Purchased from Hershel Burt in 1967 and brought home by the consignor in his brand new Pontiac convertible. Along for the ride was a Paine Wingate tall clock (see below).

Maine Tall Case Clock by Paine Wingate (1767-1863) of Augusta.  A crisp, signed dial. Birdseye Maple Case. Measures 93” tall. Purchased from Hershel Burt on the same day in 1967, as the Frederic Wingate.

    
Outstanding 18th century Delaware Valley Ladderback Armchair, in outstanding condition. Measures 45” tall. Structurally immaculate and untouched.  Early varnish, over original “Fire” Red Paint.  Discovered recently in an upper Midwest home.

A remarkable piece of Maine painted furniture with an even more amazing, documented provenance! Originally made for Miss Polly Sewall of Bath, Maine on February 28, 1838, this child’s or small ladies sized desk is accompanied by Miss Sewall’s original wallpaper covered, personal account book, which contains her entry of the desk’s purchase!! In its original red paint, the desk measures a stunning 24 ½” wide by 34” tall and 13 ¾” deep.

A pleasing primitive portrait of a young beauty! OOC. Unsigned. Measures 29 ½” by 26” (sight) and 37 ½” by 33 ½” (overall). Old replacement frame.

“Pemigewasset Valley”

WILLIAM JURIAN KAULA

(Am. 1871-1951)

OOC. Measures 32” by 39 ½”.

Recently discovered in a home near Bangor, Maine. Untouched, uncleaned and unframed. Signed lower left. An exhibition tag appears verso from “The Guild of Boston Artists” along with other information (see photo). An original  $600 price is penned on its stretcher.

     
An early Maine tapered leg Tavern Table in outstanding original red paint and condition. An untouched and nicely proportioned example, having generous overhang on its nicely scrubbed, breadboard ended, single board top. Its original carved wooden drawer pulls, remain intact. Measures 41 3/4" wide by 29 5/8” deep and stands 28 1/2” tall. Recently discovered in a home in Brewer, Maine.

Two splendid ca. 1820 paint decorated "BRADLEYVILLE" (Newtown), Connecticut Rabbit Ear Armchairs. Their complex decoration was done by the same hand and their stenciled splat vignettes are identical. The chairs are in untouched and original condition throughout. Each chair has a 1955 exhibition tag for Newtown, CT's 250 year celebration. Bradleyville, a section of the  village of Sandy Hook in Newtown, was later known as the Zoar District. 

Outstanding and bold, Maine sponge paint decorated Desk Box with an ivory escutcheon and fitted interior. Original period, brass, bail type handle. Superb, original condition, throughout. Measures  22” wide by 8”high and 11” deep.

A highly developed Maine birch one drawer Sheraton stand in superb, original "Lipstick" red paint and having a nicely contrasting, banded birdseye maple drawer front. Stands 28" tall. Its top measures 19  7/8" by 19  1/4". Found in Farmington, Maine.

Exquisite, Small Paint Decorated and Stenciled Maine Deacon's Bench. Discovered recently in a home in Waterville, ME. Outstanding original condition throughout. Measures a petite 54" wide. Note the "Fire" Red priming coat that is undisturbed on the underside of its plank seat.

A nicely developed, wide seated, Birdcage Windsor Armchair in a superior surface of EARLY Windsor Green over its original Fire Red (possibly a primer coat). A nicely carved detail at the arm’s knuckle is noted, along with exaggerated “rake” to its back. Seat height: 17 ¾” Overall height: 34”. Width at seat: 19 3/8”. Found in Central Maine.

A pleasing stretcher base tavern table in original red paint. The table has an unusual feature of original, mitered breadboard ends that create a "picture frame" effect to its remarkably scrubbed, single board top. Superb, untouched and original condition throughout. Measures an impressive 29" tall. Top measures 41  1/2" by 24 3/4". Originally found in Portland, Maine.

A fine selection of Early Military Items to include Civil War era Firearms, Swords, Knives, Field Gear and other interesting American Militaria from many different periods.

    
A "Best in Show" Hepplewhite period, swing leg drop leaf table, in the BEST original red paint and crafted in the FINEST of joinery. Immaculate, original condition throughout.  Cherry wood with butternut secondaries, the table may be of Shaker origin. Superb full height of 29". When open, its top measures 47" by 42". When closed 15  1/2 by 42". A remarkably crafted table in even more remarkable condition! Western Massachusetts or Eastern Upstate NY, ca. 1800.
